Partner Event - A Changing Landscape: Tax Reform in the US and Canada Regina, Saskatchewan

Gibson Turley and Krista Rabidoux will discuss the recent changes to the taxation of businesses and individuals in the US signed into law Wednesday, December 20, 2017. Key items included in the tax reform to be discussed are:

  • Reduce the corporate income tax rate to 21%, beginning January 1, 2018
  • Allow businesses an immediate write-off of the full cost of new equipment
  • Increased limitation on business interest deductions
  • Mandatory repatriation of earnings for US shareholders of controlled foreign corporations (personal and corporate)
  • Changes to net operating loss carryforwards and usage
  • Repeal the corporate alternative minimum tax (AMT), and increased individual AMT thresholds
  • State and local tax considerations under the new rules
  • Changes to individual income tax rates, and estate tax increased thresholds
  • Changes to the standard deduction and allowable itemized deductions

Sarah Tkachuk, lead Tax Partner, will also provide an update on the Canadian private corporation tax changes. Sarah will discuss the December 2017 draft legislation regarding income splitting using private corporations and the effect on corporations and their shareholders.
