Promotion of Free Trade Agreements with Columbia and Peru Positive Measures for Saskatchewan Exporters

May 22, 2009

Recognizing the importance of growing export markets in Columbia and Peru, Saskatchewan Trade and Export Partnership (STEP) views today’s announcement by Minister Gerry Ritz as very positive.

“Both Columbia and Peru are vital markets for our provincial cattle, grain, and pulse producers.  These negotiations will serve to further build the trade relationships needed and would reopen the first South American market to Canadian beef and livestock since 2003” noted Lionel LaBelle, President and CEO with STEP.  “While national sales of Canadian wheat and barley to Columbia and Peru are worth $230 million, our producers are facing increasing competition from other jurisdictions.” he added.

Canadian exports of pulse and specialty crops to Columbia are worth $80 million and to Peru $19 million.  Without a Canada - Columbia free trade agreement, pulse and specialty crops producers will face a 15% tariff disadvantage and without a Canada - Peru free trade agreement, producers will face a 25% tariff disadvantage for lentils and peas and a 12% tariff disadvantage for canary seed.  “This opportunity allows for a level playing field in a very competitive global environment with direct benefits to Saskatchewan exporters” LaBelle noted.
