Saskatchewan Exporters Assisted by Federal Trade Relationship Initiative DiscussionsApril 20, 2009 REGINA - Saskatchewan Trade and Export Partnership (STEP) views the recent trade relation partnership discussions undertaken by the Governments of Canada and the Kingdom of Morocco as a positive initiative for Saskatchewan exporters. Responding to the recent discussions for the negotiation of a mutually beneficial free trade agreement and processes to strengthen the long-standing trade relationship between Canada and Morocco, STEP’s President & CEO, Lionel LaBelle noted that “the process undertaken by Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz clearly has positive benefits for our Saskatchewan exporters. Strengthened trade relationships provide an excellent opportunity for our members to continue to compete in the global marketplace by accessing and expanding new markets.” Last week, the Federal Minister met with Agriculture Minister Aziz Akhenouch and Trade Minister Abdellatif Mazouz in Rabat, Morocco to discuss such opportunities. In 2008, the trade relationship between Canada and Morocco was worth $450 million with agricultural products accounting for the vast majority of that trade for a total of $330 million. 'On a provincial level, such an agreement fits well with our current exporting capabilities and would provide the opportunity to open the door for future opportunities beyond this sector” noted LaBelle. “Sound and long-standing relationships are key to our member’s success and a proven means to stimulate trade and investment. The Minister is to be commended for exploring such an initiative that would create a comprehensive and reciprocal trade relationship” he added.
