STEP Announces Journalism Fellowship Recipient

September 19, 2008

Kristine MacDougall, a news reporter with the Grenfell Sun/Broadview Express, a division of Transcontinental Media Inc., has been awarded the Saskatchewan Trade & Export Partnership (STEP) Journalism Fellowship for 2008. The STEP Journalism Fellowship provides assistance for in-market travel to research and write stories of the candidate’s choice pertaining to trade from a Saskatchewan business perspective. Successful applicants receive up to $5000 towards their travel costs. MacDougall was selected from a range of submissions by Saskatchewan news professionals.

“Each year, the interest level and the caliber of candidates for this Fellowship is very strong as we continue to find unique stories about the varied capabilities of our Saskatchewan exporters” said Lionel LaBelle, President & CEO of STEP. “The Fellowship is a proven method to promote global opportunities in international trade while raising the awareness of the province’s many talented companies” he noted.

Focusing on agriculture equipment manufacturers, MacDougall will travel to Russia this fall to meet with local government representatives, producers and key business contacts in this sector. While in the market, she will focus on the impact of Saskatchewan’s proven technology in Russia, the economic benefits of the established business partnerships as well as portraying the challenges and issues that local companies have overcome to succeed in this highly competitive market.

MacDougall noted “with Saskatchewan leading the country in export growth in 2008, including contributions from agricultural manufacturing industries, it is so very important for people of this province to realize and understand the impact that Saskatchewan is having in other parts of the world. In addition to providing farmers and professionals in this sector with top quality, cost efficient and effective products and/or equipment, these Saskatchewan companies offer ongoing sales, assembly and technical training to ensure the overall success of their product in the Russian market.”

STEP is a non-profit, membership driven, government/industry partnership designed to promote the growth of Saskatchewan's export industry. The organization successfully assists provincial businesses in realizing global marketing opportunities through specially tailored services and programs. STEP pursues growth in existing foreign markets and opens doors to new ones. Members include both businesses that are experienced and those that are new to international trade. The STEP team of professionals has the experience, knowledge, and international contacts to help companies meet their international marketing objectives.
