Saskatchewan Forest Sector signs agreement with STEPOctober 17, 2008The Saskatchewan Forest Centre (SFC) and the Saskatchewan Trade & Export Partnership (STEP) signed an agreement today to provide services for market development for the forest sector in the province. “The Saskatchewan Forest Centre contracted STEP last October to provide a needs assessment that evaluated exporting issues in relation to the forest sector,” said Rob Woodward, CEO. “The needs assessment was completed in March of 2008 and showed that the requirements of support were different for the primary industry than for the secondary or manufacturing industry. The SFC and STEP decided to move forward to address these distinct needs.” Woodward goes on to say, “The report found that the secondary or manufacturing industry is in good shape, is in fact growing but is challenged to maintain its industry base. However, the primary industry is struggling mainly due to effects of declining demand from the US and to the impact of the softwood lumber agreement. The partnership between STEP and the SFC will raise awareness of new export potential for both industries.” In response to the identified needs from the report, the SFC and STEP agreed that in order for industry to move forward each organization would devote resources to this end. In the agreement signed today, STEP will provide export market awareness and market education, along with export market intelligence. STEP will work with the industry to identify strategic business opportunities. Three outgoing and one incoming buyer missions that involve companies from the forest industry in Saskatchewan will provide the basis for the activity. Funding partner of the Saskatchewan Forest Centre is the Government of Saskatchewan. For more information, please contact: Robin Woodward, CEO Saskatchewan Forest Centre 306-765-2848
