STEP Announces Journalism Fellowship RecipientAugust 22, 2007A Saskatoon journalist has been awarded the Saskatchewan Trade & Export Partnership (STEP) Journalism Fellowship for 2007. Mr. Rod Nickel with the Saskatoon StarPhoenix was selected from a range of submissions by Saskatchewan news professionals. The STEP Journalism Fellowship provides assistance for in-market travel to research and write stories of the candidate’s choice pertaining to trade from a Saskatchewan business perspective. Successful applicants receive up to $5000 towards their travel costs. “The caliber of candidates for the Journalism Fellowship increases on a yearly basis as we continue to find unique stories about the capabilities of Saskatchewan exporters” said Mr. Dale Botting, President & CEO of STEP. “The Fellowship is a proven method to promote global opportunities in international trade while raising the awareness of the province’s many talented companies,” he noted. Identified as a key market, Brazil presents rich opportunities for Saskatchewan exporters and demonstrates that Saskatchewan companies can dominate despite the major challenges of distance and culture. Rod Nickel’s Fellowship will focus on the identified opportunities in the potash industry as Brazil increases their fertilizer consumption to increase crop production. Saskatchewan’s growing canary seed production and pet food market opportunities have also been identified as growth opportunities. Rod will trace these Saskatchewan commodities from port to the wholesale buyer, to the farmer applying fertilizer and to the retailer selling bird feed. Rod notes that “the stories of two strong exports are best told where they are making an impact. In this case, this is in the foreign market”. He added that, “without the Fellowship, it would be impossible to portray to the Saskatchewan audience how these exports have forged strong trade links between Saskatchewan and Brazil”. The 2007 Fellowship Selection Committee included Randall Mang of Randall Anthony Communications, Dr. Mitch Diamonotpolous, School of Journalism, University of Regina, Jacki Litke, Saskatchewan Industry and Resources and Dale Botting, President & CEO, Saskatchewan Trade & Export Partnership.
