Best Cooking Pulses is a Canadian, family-owned agrifoods business active in the international pulse trade since 1936. The company was founded during the great depression when Western Canadian farmers, Stephen Heal and Chauncy Eckhert, were contracted to grow peas for a canner. By harvest, the canner was bankrupt and Stephen and Chauncy has a box car of peas. They flipped a coin to see who would travel east to sell their crop. In Montreal, Chauncey sold the peas for a good profit and BCP was born!
Descendants of Stephen Heal are still responsible for BCP today. They have two plants on the Canadian Prairies. At Rowatt, Saskatchewan they clean, de-hull, split and polish peas for both domestic and international markets. At Portage la Prairie, Manitoba they crush and grind peas, pea hulls and other pulses to produce fibre, bran and flour products.
