Shannon Jakes has a strong understanding of the opportunities presented to, and the challenges faced by Saskatchewan’s entrepreneurs, in her current role as Senior Manager, CIBC Commercial Banking.  Having lived and worked in Saskatchewan all her life, she has held a number of senior positions within various financial institutions over the past 24 years.  For the majority of her career, she has focused her efforts primarily in the area of commercial financial services, and has had the privilege of working directly with a diverse group of clients operating in a wide range of industries. Shannon takes great pride in cultivating solid and trusting relationships with her clientele, and remains active in a number of charitable and community organizations.  In addition to the STEP Board, she also currently serves as a Director of the Saskatoon Downtown Business Improvement District.

Tim Wiens provides the leadership for O & T Farms. Tim is active in both industry organizations and the community. He has been the Saskatchewan director for the Canadian Egg Marketing Agency (CEMA) and is past chair of the Saskatchewan Egg Board. In 2000, Tim was elected as a director for the Canadian Western Agribition. He has also served on a number of committees including the Chamber of Commerce’s Action Saskatchewan Plan, the Regina Regional Economic Development Association and as a director of Prairie Diagnostic Services.

Cory Furman practices intellectual property law with a focus on domestic and foreign patent, trademark and copyright protection and enforcement, as well as international intellectual property portfolio strategy planning and the IP-related aspects of commercial transactions.  As a registered patent and trademark agent, Cory represents clients before the Canadian Intellectual Property Office in various patent, trademark and copyright matters. His clients range from individuals to multinational corporations to education and research institutions. Much of Cory’s general advising on portfolio strategies involves cross-border issues with the United States and elsewhere.  Beyond advising clients upon and assisting with the implementation of intellectual property strategies in Canada and abroad, Cory also provides transactional support to parties in various corporate finance and other commercial transactions including validity, infringement, freedom to operate and other due diligence topics.

Ngee Cau moved back to Regina in July 2006 to join MarkeTel Multi-Line Dialing Systems Ltd. as the CEO. Ngee was in Shanghai, China where he was with Microsoft in the Global Outsourcing Team responsible for Microsoft outsourcing strategies for Asia Pacific. Prior to Microsoft he was with Nortel Networks based in Hong Kong and Vancouver, Canada.  Ngee grew up in Regina but went to the University of British Columbia for both his Bachelor of Commerce and International MBA degrees from the University of British Columbia. He began his career in the high tech industry at Nortel Networks in Vancouver, BC.

Dale Lemke

Dale Lemke founded Display Systems International in 1983.  He designed and developed the first product called a character generator, which was software that was burned into a cartridge, which turned the Atari game machine into a cable TV advertising and information display system. DSI continues to develop software products compatible with Windows Operating Systems that are used by the cable and private cable TV industry for advertising channels, community events and program listings. Over the last 22 years, about 95% of DSI’s sales have been made in the US. Dale Lemke also co-founded Terminal Systems International in 1997, with a partner. TSI has developed software products that are used by airports to facilitate arrival and display functions. TSI has over 30 installations in airports around the world, in countries such as the US, Mexico, Taiwan, Ecuador, Dominican Republic and Canada. Dale is a founding member of SATA (the Saskatchewan Advanced Technology Association) and the Provincial Exporters Association.

Paul Degelman is a second generation member to operate the family business, Degelman Industries Ltd.  He has been involved with the family business for over 25 years.  His work ethic and attitude were instilled from an early age as he began his career as a farm helper at the Degelman Farms near Raymore, Saskatchewan.  He holds a great amount of respect for the farming profession in Saskatchewan.  Paul has worked in multiple areas of the organization most notably as a product specialist working closely with the research and development team.  Paul is currently the Sales and Marketing Manager at Degelman Industries Ltd. responsible for worldwide sales.

Sandra Purdy is President of Prairie Berries Inc. a vertically integrated agriculture business that grows, processes, and markets Saskatoon berry products domestically and internationally. She is actively involved in the Saskatchewan Fruit Growers Association and was a director on the board for six years and sat as president for 3 years.  Recently, Sandra established the Saskatoon Berry Council of Canada, to act as a voice for the industry, create market awareness, establish marketing strategy for Saskatoon Berries outside Western Canada and determine what research is necessary to promote the attributes of Saskatoon berries.

Kevin assumed the role of President of Schulte Industries Ltd in January 2006 following a one year term as a Marketing Specialist.  During the 12 years prior to joining Schulte, Kevin was employed by Flexi-Coil and CNH in Saskatoon in a variety of roles including a Territory Manager, Product Specialist, Product Manager, Global Platform Marketing Manager and finally as the North American Marketing Manager for Seeding and Planting Equipment for the Flexi-Coil, New Holland and Case IH brands.  Kevin is very active in community organizations extending volunteer efforts to the Humboldt and District Hospital Foundation Equipment Campaign, St. Peter’s College, Carlton Trail Regional Economic Development Authority and its Affordable Housing committee, Prairie Innovation Enterprise Region, Minor Hockey and the Humboldt Broncos.  Kevin was raised on a farm near Penzance, Saskatchewan and has always been active in the agricultural community.  Kevin completed a Degree in Agriculture, Specializing in Mechanized Agriculture at the University of Saskatchewan in 1987.   His wife, Karen, who is also a Ag Grad from the U of S is employed as a sales representative for BASF Canada.

Craig Bailey

Craig Bailey’s career in transportation spans 32 years. He began in the industry with Canadian Pacific Railway and served the company in various capacities in both Marketing and Operations for 23 years.  In 2003 he joined the Yanke Group of Companies as Director of Multimodal Services.  In 2004 he assumed the international global products portfolio and now serves as Vice President of three operational divisions as well as Yanke’s  Corporate, Safety, Customs and Operator Orientation Programs.  Craig studied Economics and Marketing at Wilfrid Laurier University and Logistics and Training Development at the University of Tennessee.  His philosophy for success is to work with the brightest and the best people you can find, learn from them and apply that knowledge.  Craig has been married to his wife Nancy for 30 years and they have one son.

Tim Gabruch

Tim currently holds the position of Vice-President, Marketing Strategy and Administration with Cameco Corporation.  In this role, he is responsible for a diverse corporate marketing group that manages market planning, strategy development, logistics, sales, and administration.  Tim joined Cameco’s marketing department in 1994, and worked in North American sales until being seconded to the London-based Uranium Institute (now the World Nuclear Association) from 1997 to 1998.  In 1999 he was part of a team that relocated to Minneapolis, Minnesota to open Cameco’s US-based marketing & sales subsidiary.  Tim remained in that group through 2006, during which time he held various roles managing Asian and European sales, and uranium trading activities. Tim returned to Cameco’s Saskatoon-based corporate office in 2007 and as a director in its Corporate Development and Power Generation department, participated in identifying, evaluating and managing various investment opportunities, acquisitions and other business development projects for Cameco.  Tim was born and raised in North Battleford, Saskatchewan and holds bachelor degrees in Arts (political studies) and Commerce as well as a Masters in Business Administration, all from the University of Saskatchewan.

George MacKay received his Bachelor of Arts at the University of Manitoba and the Executive MBA Program through Queens University, Kingston, Ontario.  His last 15 years have been spent travelling the globe in pursuit of new market opportunities for his parent company, Bourgault Industries Ltd. and most recently Highline Mfg. Ltd.  George has travelled some 22 countries, most often through Eastern Europe from the far east of Russia to Kazakhstan and Ukraine.  His time has been spent in rural areas as well as all of the major cities in the former Soviet Union.  In 2009 Bourgault Industries was the top importer on dollars of seeding and tillage equipment to Russia, as confirmed by the Russian Customs Office.  George has established Bourgault offices with staff on site in Kazakhstan and Russia.  Prior to joining Bourgault Industries George was employed with the Saskatchewan Research Council where he held a position as Vice President of SRC, Director of the Prairie Agricultural Machinery Centre under contract to SRC and Chairman of the Board of the Beef Genetics Center.  George secured applied research projects in various countries including Columbia and Mongolia.

Ranga Ranganathan

Ramaswami (Ranga) Ranganathan was born in Coimbatore, India, and came to Saskatoon in September 1968 to pursue his PhD in Chemical Engineering at the University of Saskatchewan.  After completing his PhD, he worked at Natural Resources Canada in Ottawa from 1974 to 1981.  He was drawn back to Saskatchewan in 1981 to work for SaskOil Research and Development which was integrated into the Saskatchewan Research Council (SRC) in 1985. Since then, Ranga has worked at SRC in several capacities, serving as Director in branches including process development, petroleum, and mining and minerals. Ranga is currently the Director of Business Development at SRC, where he actively networks with clients and other research and funding organizations to promote and develop SRC-led projects. He is a member of the Chemical Institute of Canada, the Canadian Society of Chemical Engineers and the Association of Professional Engineers of Saskatchewan.  He continues to serve as an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Saskatchewan where he has had the opportunity to serve on boards for various graduate candidates. Ranga has several technical publications and patents in his name and has participated in a variety of national and international conferences and delegations. Ranga lives in Saskatoon with his wife Prema where they are actively involved in the work of the Sri Sathya Sai Baba Centre of Saskatoon where Ranga teaches human values classes. Although Ranga was born and raised in India, he has spent more than half his life in Saskatchewan and he strongly believes in promoting Saskatchewan interests worldwide.

Alanna Koch

Alanna Koch was appointed Deputy Minister of Agriculture for the Government of Saskatchewan in November 2007.  Alanna has been involved in the agriculture industry, both professionally and personally, for most of her life.  For the two years prior to her appointment as Deputy Minister, she worked with the Canadian Agri-Food Trade Alliance (CAFTA) – an organization that advocates an open and fair trading environment for agriculture and agri-food products – first as Vice-President and then as President.  Her background in agriculture and agricultural policy also includes the roles of Director with Agricore United, Executive Director with the Western Canadian Wheat Growers Association and Director of the George Morris Centre at the University of Guelph.  Alanna has also helped develop agricultural extension services in Atlantic Canada, served as a national judge for Canada’s Outstanding Young Farmers’ program and as a committee member for Canadian Western Agribition.  She has a Chartered Director designation from the Directors College, a program of the Conference Board of Canada and the Michael D. DeGroote School of Business at McMaster University. She is a graduate of the Canadian Agriculture Lifetime Leadership program and an Honorary Life Member of the Saskatchewan Institute of Agrologists.  Alanna, with her husband, Gerry Hertz, own and operate a grain farm at Edenwold, Saskatchewan.  They have two teenage daughters who keep them very busy.  They are also very involved in their small community of Edenwold.

Chris Dekker

Chris obtained an Honours Degree in Commerce from the University of Saskatchewan.  Following graduation, he worked in marketing with Maple Leaf Foods in Edmonton and as the Market Research Analyst with the North Battleford Local Economic Development Authority.  Chris has worked in the provincial government as Executive Assistant to the Minister of Revenue and Financial Services and the Minister of Health and was also appointed Assistant Press Secretary in Executive Council.  In 1996, Chris became the Manager of the Communications Branch for the City of Saskatoon where he produced numerous provincial and national award-winning communication strategies.  Chris was appointed to the position of Manager of Public and Intergovernmental Affairs and Special Projects in 2005.  His duties included project manager for the popular River Landing redevelopment initiative.  Chris returned to the Government of Saskatchewan in March 2009 as Senior Vice President of Marketing and Communications for Enterprise Saskatchewan, the new special operation agency of the provincial government responsible for economic development.  In July, 2010, Chris was appointed Chief Executive Officer.  He is an Accredited Public Relations Practitioner (APR), past-president of the Saskatoon Chapter of the Canadian Public Relations Society, past-director on the National Board of the Canadian Public Relations Society, and is currently a director on Saskatchewan Tourism Board and Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization Board.

Doug Moen

Doug Moen joined Executive Council June 1, 2009 from the Ministry of Justice and Attorney General where he served as Deputy Minister of Justice and Deputy Attorney General since 2002. Prior to this he was the Executive Director of the Public Law Division and the Executive Director of the Community Justice Division since 1997.  Graduating from the College of Law, University of Saskatchewan in 1979, he then articled with the Harradence, Longworth and Zatlyn law firm in Prince Albert. After spending two years working at the House of Commons in Ottawa, Moen returned to Saskatchewan and started his career with the Saskatchewan Department of Justice holding positions of increasing responsibility and accountability in the legislative services, and public law and policy areas.  Doug was appointed Queen's Counsel in 1995. He served as President of the Uniform Law Conference of Canada, was a member of the Executive of the Canadian Bar Association - Saskatchewan Branch, and was a board member of Information Services Corporation of Saskatchewan. He was a commissioner with the Regina Crime Prevention Commission, and is a member and past-president of the Phoenix Residential Society. In February, 2009, Doug was a member of the Canadian Delegation to the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland, when Canada's Human Rights Record was under review.  Moen has a keen interest in Aboriginal and restorative justice and in community-based approaches to justice services. He was involved in the formation of the Community Justice Division in 1997, and worked to establish the Saskatchewan Commission on First Nations and Métis Peoples and Justice Reform.  Doug lives in Regina; but maintains strong connections to his family farm in southwest Saskatchewan. He is married and has a son and a daughter.
