SummaryThe continuation of the pet humanization trend is impacting the pet products industry by driving growth of premium pet foods and treats, luxury pet products such as pet clothing and accessories in addition to healthcare products including prescription and non-prescription pet dietary supplements.
The U.S. is the largest market for pet food at about $18 billion for 2008. The pet food industry is a very concentrated marketplace. The top five companies account for two-thirds of the global retail value sales.
These include: Mars Inc., Nestle SA, Colgate Palmolive Co., Procter & Gamble Co., and Del Monte Foods. A profile of each of these companies is included which identifies their involvement in the pet food industry and market share position.
Pet superstores and pet shops have surpassed supermarkets/hypermarkets as the most important retail channel for pet food and other pet care products. PetSmart and Petco are driving the growth of the pet superstore. Together they operate over 1,655 outlets across the U.S.
