SummaryThis report includes a short overview of 13 of the largest retail farm and garden chains in the Midwest United States. The 12 Midwest states, as defined by the United States Department of Commerce, are as follows: Illinois (IL), Indiana (IN), Iowa (IA), Kansas (KS), Michigan (MI), Minnesota (MN), Missouri (MO), Ohio (OH), Nebraska (NE), North Dakota (ND), South Dakota (SD) and Wisconsin (WI).
The US Census Bureau defines farm supply dealers as:
'Establishments primarily engaged in the wholesale distribution of animal feeds, fertilizers, agricultural chemicals, pesticides, seeds and other farm supplies, except grains. These establishments are selling directly to farmers for farm use.'
For the US economic census, farm supply dealers are included in a broader category of nursery and garden centers. The complete US NAICS classification that includes farm supply dealers is included below:
- NAICS 444 Building materials and garden equipment and supplies dealers
- NAICS 4442 Lawn and garden equipment and supplies stores
- NAICS 444220 Nursery, Garden Center, and Farm Supply Stores
'This industry comprises establishments primarily engaged in retailing nursery and garden products, such as trees, shrubs, plants, seeds, bulbs, and sod that are predominantly grown elsewhere. These establishments may sell a limited amount of a product they grow themselves. Also included in this industry are establishments primarily engaged in retailing farm supplies, such as animal (non-pet) feed'.
For most of the companies included, the retail locations and product categories are included. Most retail chains indicated that they purchase direct from manufacturers and work very little with distributors or wholesalers. Manufacturers are encouraged to contact these companies directly. Most prefer to receive information via mail, followed by a phone call.
There are currently 4,898 establishments in the Nursery, Garden Center, and Farm Supply Stores sector in Midwestern United States.
